LifeLine Animal Project has dealt with many different kinds of animals since taking over the DeKalb and Fulton county shelters. In addition to cats and dogs, we’ve cared for gerbils, guinea pigs, snakes, goats, pigs, horses and more, but we never imagined we’d be caring for over 300 exotic birds.

How did we end up with so many birds? It all began on July 13 when DeKalb County Animal Services Enforcement division received a tip from an anonymous caller about the birds. After investigating and obtaining a search warrant, Enforcement notified LifeLine at DCAS.
LifeLine accompanied Enforcement and DeKalb County Police to the home during the raid. Firefighters were also called in due to the toxic levels of ammonia. Tragically, over 30 birds were found dead.

LifeLine Veterinarian Dr. Kathryn Haines was requested as the on-site veterinarian, and she and several LifeLine employees were able to confiscate and remove all of the birds safely in one day. The birds were then taken to an undisclosed location to begin treatment, and Wendy Wass was on site as the birds arrived to begin assessing and caring for them.
